Hot off the Press

1. The Presentation Evening WILL go ahead, with bookings and deposits required now, see the notice on the Bar in the Clubhouse. Get your names down quick or you’ll be too late!

2. Gwen has asked that you all scour your attics for items fit for the Tombola stall at the next Coffee Morning due on Friday the 3rd July. These revenue raising opportunities need to be maximised if we are to proceed in the next couple of years with extensions to our pavilion, the possibilities for which are to be examined over the coming weeks.

3. PLEASE ENTER IN YOUR DIARY THE Date 25th July 2009. Not only is this the date for the Annual Barbie (never to be missed), but this year will include a Grand Auction to be held in order to raise much needed funds for the replacement of our rapidly deteriorating pavilion chairs. All items which you may wish to donate for auction are to be left in the Ladies Changing Room and marked for the attention of Sylvia or Margaret.

4. And don’t forget to support and follow the progress of our remaining County Competitors:

PAT GILES who has reached the Area Final of the Ladies Champion of Champions, to be played at Peacehaven soon, and STEVE IRELAND who continues in the later stages of the Men’s Triples. GOOD LUCK to both.

CLUB HOUSE AND BOWLING GREEN                                                              CLUB BADGE

The Club was founded in 1981 and has grown steadily. Our present membership is 36 Ladies and 52 Gentlemen. We welcome Maggie and John Grinyer, Pat Martin and Martin Gill to our number. And welcome back to Bert Bassett and Stan Farr.

We are affiliated to the Sussex County Bowling Association www.sussexba.co.uk and through them to the English Bowling Association www.bowlsengland.com.  Some 59% of our members are now on email. Who says age is a barrier to technology?

Our already superior bowling green, ably maintained by Greenkeeper Kevin Bray, has recently been enhanced with rebuilt ditches. We are deeply indebted to Viridor Credits, administrators of the Landfill Community Fund on behalf of Viridor Waste Management Ltd., who have contributed£13,500 towards this £24,000 project. We are also deeply grateful to our own Peacehaven Town Council (£6,500) and Telscombe Town Council (£200) for their help in achieving this major improvement.

The pavilion was erected in 1986 and sports excellent facilities including a bar, fitted kitchen and spacious changing rooms. Additions and renovations completed in April 2006 have made this pavilion one of the best. Last Year the weather finally disposed of our storage shed and so a replacement had to be purchased. This is now in place thanks to Reg Littlewood and his team of willing workers.

Due to age and infirmity (bad back!) Reg has recently handed over his Maintenance Manager’s responsibilities to Richard Thomas. So thanks Reg and Good Luck Richard.

We are constantly seeking new members, from all sections of the community. All ages and all ability levels will be made welcome. Bowling is as much a social activity as a sporting one and to enforce this aspect there are several social functions arranged every year, from coffee mornings to quiz’s, from dances to fish and chip suppers, barbeques to candlelit bowling. During the closed season our Social Team of Norma and Don Pattenden, George and Jean Newton and Cliff and Avis Wilson organise Club social evenings on Wednesdays which prove quite popular and raise much needed revenue for the Club. The more who attend the more successful the venture. Cards, darts, dominoes, etc., you name it you bring it! And if you can carry a Pool table you’ll be even more welcome.

Touring teams from all over the country visit us during the summer. We welcome them most warmly and can help arrange accommodation in Brighton and/or Eastbourne if necessary. It’s a great day out on the Sunny South Coast. Peacehaven is exactly where the Greenwich Meridian intersects the coastline so its not hard to find. If you’re in the western hemisphere and on the UK mainland, drive south to the sea and turn left. If in the eastern, turn right.

On the bowling side we have two teams in the Brighton and Hove District League, ( http://freespace.virgin.net/league.bhdbowls/ ), (men only), in Division 1 and Division 6, and two in the Newhaven Evening League, (Ladies welcome), so there is plenty of opportunity for competitive bowling. Our Brighton and Hove League ‘A’ team retained their position in the top division after a hard fought season. Our B team have been re-elected to Division 6 along with new entry Lancing Bowls Club to whom we extend our warmest welcome.

For winter bowling we are fortunate to be within a couple of miles of Denton Island Indoor Bowling Club ( www.DIIBC.freeserve.co.uk ) where the facilities are unrivalled.

All suggestions to improve or add to this site will be welcomed.

Contact Frank Leach (01273-580240) for further information of any kind.

DITCH PROJECT INFO

After all the excitement of the opening day and final completion our green is now in excellent condition. In fact from the first day it opened it has been bowling unusually well. Most of our visitors have commented favourably both on the condition and the appearance of the green. Our Greenkeeper Kevin states that even the re-laid turf on the East side is now fully integrated, allowing us to use up to seven rinks if required. Ted Giles’ son-in-law Andy Sparsis has generously donated five large picnic tables which allows many more people to enjoy watching the bowling in the sun, with a cooling drink from the bar. What could be better, other than actually bowling? All friendly visitors welcome.

SOME PHOTOS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO BE SEEN ON THE NEWS PAGE ALONG WITH A COUPLE OF PICTURES SHOWING THE GREEN IN USE, ENTERTAINING OUR VISITORS FROM THE BOROUGH OF EYE TOUR. THESE ARE PRECEDED BY SOME TAKEN ON OUR OPENING DAY RECALLING THE VISIT OF MAYOR HELEN LIVINGS AND OTHER PEACEHAVEN TOWN COUNCIL MEMBERS
