PEACEHAVEN AND TELSCOMBE

BOWLS CLUB

SUMMER 2008

Meridian League.

Sad lack of information on this one! Did I hear a rumour that we lost to Newhaven?

BHL Updates, 14th August.

The League program finally closed with the B team’s last match on Tuesday 12th August at Peacehaven against Saltdean. We found out before the game that last week Brighton B took all ten points from Preston C which meant that we couldn’t get ourselves off the bottom of the League even if we won on all rinks. It also meant that Saltdean needed only two points to secure their Division 6 Winners title. In the event we could only manage to deprive them of two points, secured by Alan Peake and his willing workers. This was Alan’s first appearance as a Skip in the league so Well Done Alan (ably assisted by Paul Peevor, Ray Gravett and Peter Woodward). And our sincere CONGRATULATIONS to Saltdean. Their two winning rinks were worthy of their victory. We wish them every success in Division 5 next year.

Our final position? We ended nine points beneath Brighton B.

The A team, having taken the necessary steps against Hollingbury in their penultimate fixture, were in relaxed mood against Mackie in their last match. Their two points made no difference to the final placings but reinforced their right to remain amongst the upper echelon of Sussex bowling. Not bad for their first season.

WELL DONE THE ‘A’TEAM!

Newhaven and District Evening League

This year it seems inevitable that Kestrels (Newhaven) will reclaim their title of League Winners from the Flying Fish who are only prevented from winning the wooden spoon by Peacehaven. Nomads last two postponed games against the Flying Fish will have no bearing on the final outcome. The new League Winners trophy, the Laurie Cowley Trophy, is to be presented to the Flying Fish and then to the League by Laurie’s daughter Jane Mayo at a ceremony to be held at the Flying Fish pub in Denton on the 26th August. In attendance will be Bryan Kellaway, Secretary of the League, and Mike Shorer, the Seaford based Designer of Fine Jewellery who designed and made the trophy. It is made from one of Laurie’s bowls and commemorates a well known and much liked Newhaven bowler, regular of the Flying Fish and founder of the Flying Fish bowls team.

The two silver plaques on the front and rear faces of the Trophy will allow many years of winners to be recorded. Let’s hope one of Peacehaven’s two teams will be on there soon. Will it be Peacehaven or Nomads?
